What’s a Coastal Finish?

If you’re thinking about building a custom home or investing in a Palisades home, one of the key tasks in the process is picking a design style. And if you’ve started doing your homework, you may have noticed one of the most popular is the Coastal Finish.

And if you’ve heard the word, you’ve probably guessed it involves sand and beachy things. But what does that mean for home design? Essentially, coastal finish is home design at its beachy best. Think casual: airy hues, natural materials, and a relaxed atmosphere a la cottage at the seaside. Whether you live near the ocean, in the desert, or atop a mountain peak, you can still give your house a coastal feel.

At Trilogy, we’ve identified some of the most popular elements of Coastal Design here:

  • Wood and shiplap details, like white bead-board walls, wood furniture, and driftwood accents
  • Lightweight materials, like cotton, linen, and jute
  • Breezy paint colors, like soft blues, sea glass greens, and sand
  • Nickel finishes for hardware, on kitchen cabinets, doors, and furniture
  • Well-worn, salt-kissed textures with a muted, soft and shabby-chic finish

Evoke the sand, sky, and sea with your color choices. Opt for neutral walls with pops of sea-glass inspired hues. Mix and match textures on furniture like cotton, muslin, and linen and stick with casual finishes which fit with a vacation lifestyle.

Let your patterns play with subtle stripes, and muted prints like sea stars. Add subtle hints of color through the use of throw pillows, rugs, and other textiles. And when accessorizing, gravitate towards natural accents which are a nod to sand, skipping stones, and seashells.

We love helping our clients express their heart’s desire in home design. From light-filled living rooms framed by a wall of French doors to kitchens with soft white cabinets and a marble counter with rattan bar stools, we can help make it a reality.  And when you choose Trilogy, you can feel confident that we build with a higher value. It’s evident in the quality and design of our work. In addition to a Coastal Finish, our Palisades Homes line offers three other design styles: Farmhouse, Modern, and Tuscan. Explore these and find the best match to make your house feel like a home.
