5 ways to create a sleep-worthy bedroom

Get slumber-savvy with these bedroom design tips for sleep

Did you know more than a third of Americans get fewer than 7 hours of sleep each night?

Experts say most adults need between 7-9 hours each night—and if you don’t snooze, you lose: lack of sleep can affect your health and well-being. This makes it important to create a slumber-savvy space. Whether you’re being proactive for a new home build or struggling to get some shut-eye in your current bedroom, Trilogy is here to help.

Trilogy’s bedroom design tips for sleep

  • Use adjustable lighting. Know how to choose the right light. While you may want bright lights to help you read the latest John Grisham novel, being able to dim the lights as you approach bedtime is key. Skip the stark single bulb over your bed and opt for bedside lamps, dimmers, and other soft lighting for the bedroom. And if sunlight wakes you up, invest in blackout curtains or heavy blinds.

  • Remove all technology. Make your space a sanctuary for sleep by keeping it tech-free. Ban the tv, radio, grandpa’s old hi-fi stereo, and other gadgets from your bedroom to ensure you have a calm, distraction-less environment to sleep in.

  • Choose a good mattress. When it comes to choosing mattresses, be like Goldilocks! Find one that’s “just right” for you. It’s critical to pick something not too firm, not too soft, promoting a sound sleep. Most mattress stores will let you test them out, and even online mattress companies allow for returns if they’re not comfortable.

  • Pick soothing colors. The verdict is in: colors affect moods! Color psychology is a real thing, and certain hues in the home have been proven to enliven or calm occupants. Warm tones are energizing, while cool tones encourage rest. So make sure to pick the perfect paint for your bedroom!

  • Consider the layout carefully. Designing a bedroom layout from scratch is ideal if you’re able—then you can choose where you want your electrical outlets for lights, charging devices, or plug-in air filters. But whether you’re starting fresh or working with an existing room, position your bed in an easily accessible spot, with room for nightstands and other essentials.

Bonus Tip: Feng shui. You may have heard of feng shui, the practice of bringing balance and flow to your home through design. You can use it to position your furniture, use complementary colors, and incorporate plants to maximize the alignment and harmony in your bedroom.
