Tips on how to be a good neighbor this holiday season!
As the famous song says, it’s almost the “most wonderful time of the year.” We’re already filled with the holiday spirit (and too many homemade cookies...). So how are we kicking off the celebration? Why, by showing our love for the community by sharing our tips on how to be a good neighbor!
How to be a good neighbor
Are you feeling festive, too? Join us in finding inspiration from Mr. Rogers’ Won’t You Be My Neighbor, which isn’t a holiday song but embodies the same spirit. Just like the lyrics say, “It’s a beautiful day in our neighborhood,” so we’re sharing our favorite ideas on how to be good neighbors around the holidays:
- Help a neighbor with defensible space. Got neighbors struggling to keep up with yard work? Get out a rake and give them the gift of defensible space! Bag leaves and other flammable debris and make their property (and your neighborhood) a safer place.
- Make and share a meal. Know a family always on the go? Whip up a casserole, lasagna, or other easy-to-reheat meal for them. It’s a lovely thing to do during the extra-busy holiday season.
- Volunteer to help with donation deliveries. If you plan on donating to a food bank or meal service in your neighborhood during the holidays, consider going one step further and offering to be a delivery driver. While donations often increase during the holidays, so does the need for more volunteers. And doing deliveries means you might meet some new neighbors as well!
- Take the trash out. Are some of your neighbors heading out for the holidays? Offer to take out their trash while they’re gone. It’ll help them out and prevent local critters from having a garbage buffet while they’re away!
- Be social. The holidays can be a lonely time for some people. Reach out to vulnerable neighbors in need, and invite them over for cookies. Or have your own holiday block party, and invite your neighbors over for turkey or pumpkin pie.
- Have a cookie exchange. Holiday cheer and cookies are a winning combo! Organize a sweet treat swap this season in your neighborhood. It’ll give everyone the opportunity to get together and have fun trying new recipes.
Want to share the joy? Get the kids involved, too—these could be gifts from them to their community. It’s never too early to learn how to be a good neighbor!
