Living room: the name says it all! We do so much of our “living” in this space, whether it’s having a snack-fueled movie marathon with the fam or packing in as many party people as possible while hosting on a holiday. But how do you create a living room design for your lifestyle? Luckily, Trilogy’s here to help kick-start your living room ideas and more with these questions below.

First, think about the functionality and flow of your ideal living room. Maybe you need lots of space between furniture for the daily kid/dog stampede every morning? Or maybe you like clusters of furniture to create “moments” of different rooms within a room.
Is it a silent, zen-like retreat where you can unfurl your yoga mat for a sunset sesh while your partner reads golf magazines on the couch? Or does it need to be able to withstand a Category 1 Hurricane level of activity from your littles and their friends coming over after school daily?

Consider the placement and organization of your furniture and decor. For example, where will your TV go? In a hutch? Or over the custom redwood mantle? How high up will it be? And will your mantle be thick enough?
Do you want your living room design to be an open floor plan flowing into other rooms? Or its own separate space with a door you can close when your husband’s cheering on his football team at full volume?
Determine if you want this space to feel cozy, open, elegant, or relaxed. What kind of mood do you want to evoke or experience every time you, your family, and guests enter the room?
Is the relaxed mood lighting in your current home making it difficult for your mother-in-law to see when she visits? Add more lighting options! Do you increasingly need more storage every time the holidays roll around or lacrosse season/school starts? Consider extra closets or built-in shelving!
Do you love livin’ large in a modern marvel? Or curling up in a quaint and cozy farmhouse? Maybe you’re a romantic Tuscan at heart, or know a coastal style really floats your boat?
If you like natural light, do you want to enhance or diffuse it? And don’t forget to consider how you’ll incorporate other lighting types: ambient (doing the main lighting of your home), task (like a reading lamp by a comfy chair), and accent (such as small wall sconces setting a cozy mood).

If you’re a modern minimalist, you might not need an entire wall of shelving for a display. But if you’ve got oodles of grandma’s family heirlooms, assigning space for cabinets to showcase them could be wise.
Got big items like a floor-to-ceiling gold gilded statement mirror? Or maybe a giant sectional? Think about how these large pieces will fit in relation to windows and walls. Ditto if you have a fireplace in your design! Try doing a quick napkin sketch to make sure it all works in your layout.
Pick the furniture first and the paint last. Why? While it’s tempting to base your design on paint colors straight from the top home trends of 2025, don’t do it! Start by selecting furniture, rugs, and other accessories. It’s easier to match paint to furniture than attempt to match a lot of furniture based on the color alone.
